Marbled endpapers & speckled page edges. Engraved title pages. A slim silk bookmark in each volume. Texts are bright, tight & clean. Internal hinges are intact. V-1 [2, iv, lxii, 468pp, 12]. V-2 [ 2, iii, 484pp, 11]. V-3 [2, 463pp, 10]. V-4 [2, 429pp, 6]. V-5 [2,426pp, 6]. V-6 [2, 424pp, 16]. V-7 [2, 470pp,8]. V-8 [ 2, 389pp, 9]. There is an index at the beginning & end of volume 1 and an index at the end of volumes 2-8. Volumes 2, 3, 4 & 6 are VG. Volumes 1, 5, 7 & 8 are G+. Spines & corners are lightly rubbed & a few have bumped corners. Vol. 1: Front cover starting 1" with tiny chip @ spine top. Vol. 3: page 449 has top corner torn not affecting text. Vol. 5: front hinge cracked with cover firmly attached. Vol. 7: rear hinge starting 1" @ top. Vol. 8: front hinge starting 2" @ top & bottom. The Spectator was a daily publication founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in England, lasting from 1711 to 1712. Steel's original run of the Spectator consisted of 555 numbers, beginning on 1 March 1711. These were collected into seven volumes. The paper was revived by Addison in 1714, appearing 3x/week for six months, and these papers when collected formed the eighth volume. The authors of The Spectator promoted family, marriage, and courtesy. It continued to be popular and widely read into the late 18th and 19th centuries.
