White trade paperback with blue and black lettering, black and white photos, and a drawing of a large home on the cover. Previous owner's name. Front cover has brown spotting. Small tear at base of spine. Smith first comes to notice about 1851 with plans to build the European and North American Railway with its terminus in his home town, Shediac. He opposed Confederation at first, but eventually became a strong supporter. He is credited with giving New Brunswick responsible government and the secret ballot. He died at 61, leaving at attractive widow 25 years younger. The rest of the book deals with her travels, her writing, and her mental instability. .
