Sobre este artículo

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1915. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first issue. (Book measures 7/8" across top.) Presentation copy signed by Edgar Lee Masters in the year of publication, inscribed "To Caroline Blackman, with the sincere friendship of E.L. Masters May 3rd 1915." xvii, 248, [6, ads] pp. Original bluish green cloth with gilt lettering, housed in a black leather slipcase. Very Near Fine with light rubbing, lacking jacket. Personal bookplate of publisher Alfred A. Knopf on paste down.

Laid-in are two letters signed by Masters: one is an autograph letter signed in pencil, dated "July 28 - 35" and is addressed "Dear Mr. Clark:" in which Masters invites Clark for a beer and to have a literary chat. The other is a typed letter signed in pencil, dated January 10, 1929 and is addressed to legal thriller writer and fellow lawyer Arthur Train, in which Masters agrees to serve on the Author's League Council. Letters are toned, creased with some wear, chipping, with one faint inkstamp.

One of the all-time bestselling works of poetry in America, still in print and used in many theater classes for monologues. Very uncommon signed in the year of publication.

Sinopsis

The innovative free verse collection of small-town life that made Edgar Lee Masters a legend A literary sensation when it appeared in 1915, Spoon River Anthology earned Edgar Lee Masters comparisons to T. S. Eliot and Walt Whitman. The characters who speak here tarnish the pure image of their Midwestern hamlet by holding forth from the grave with tales of illicit love affairs, betrayed confidences, political corruption, and miserable marriages. The first serious work of psychological naturalism, this artful indictment of small-town hypocrisy influenced Theodore Dreiser, William Faulkner, and other luminaries.
