2 vols. 12mo. viii, 265; viii, 303pp., contemporary sprinkled calf, sides with a double gilt fillet border, spines with raised bands highlighted by double gilt fillets, russet morocco title labels gilt, direct numbered gilt, front joint of vol.I mostly cracked but tight, slight cracking of joints in vol.II, child's drawings in pencil (easily removable) on two endpapers, else very good.

First published in 1753 (B.L. and Cambridge only in Britain) and republished in Dublin in 1754 and 1762 (both very rare) and in Berwick in 1789. Miss Smythies (fl. 1753-59) also published two other novels, The Brothers (1758) and The History of Lucy Wethers (1754), and a story for children.
