Paris: Edition de la Plume, 1899. First printing. Paperback. Good. First edition, 1899, one of ten copies reserved for the author, from the collection of Edmond Roze and his wife, Jeanne Sylvain Roze. Folio (14 inches, 36 cm), wraps, good copy with some soil to covers, loss to lower front corner, text very good, reproducing the handwritten verse of the author on rectos only, divided into two parts, of 17 and 20 poems. RARE. Jean Moréas, a Greek poet and critic, wrote mainly in French and was one of the most important of the Symbolist authors of the late 19th century, including authoring the group's manifesto in 1886. During the 1890s, as the Symbolists became more politically involved and anarchic, Moréas reached back to his Greek roots to infuse his own form of Symbolist writing with ancient Greek moral and political elements.
