LONDON : John van Voorst, 1856 A classic work on the natural history of the sea shore. It gives a detailed record of a summer holiday that Gosse spent in Tenby studying the shoreline and the wide variety of species that he found. it has 24 partly coloured plates of sea creatures - some microscopic. It is in the original green decorative cloth binding which has had a cloth case repair. It has a new green cloth spine to match with leather label and gilt titles. The contents are tight and in generally good condition with some brown spotting. A previous owner has written the magnification (x110) in ink at the bottom of one of the plates.

LONDON : Willis and Sotheran, 1856 In very clean and undamaged red cloth library binding with gilt titles to spine. Originally owned by Nottingham City Public Library - there is a library stamp to the front endpaper and small oval stamps to the title page and each page of plates (usually at the bottom and not over the plate itself). Contents extremely bright and clean. The book looks unread. Some of the pages have been printed more lightly than others. Sylvanus revised Wood's work - changing the system of classification from that of Linneus to that of Lamarck. With 46 coloured plates of shells.

Edinburgh: W H Lizars , 1842 A good copy of the 1st edition of VolsI & II of the Natural History of British Fishes in the original publisher's brown cloth binding with 68 hand coloured plates. Part of Jardine's Naturalist's Library but complete in themselves. Both volumes have been rebacked: relaying the original spines with gilt titles, and retaining the original green endpapers. Both bindings are clean, tight and sound with slight fading to board edges. Vol I, 1842, with volume listing; black and white frontispiece portrait of Rondelius; vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Rondelet; text and 34 plates bound at the rear. 313pp. The text pages are largely unopened. There is some brown spotting to text and some pages are brown toned. The plates are brightly and well coloured. London : James Cundee, 1806 A good copy of this scarce 6 volume work bound in 3 volumes. With 58 (of 60) hand coloured plates and 6 hand coloured vignette title pages. An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. London, Edinburgh, and Dublin: A Fullarton and Co. , 1853 A good copy of the 7th corrected and enlarged edition in the original brown cloth binding, with 21 hand coloured plates. The binding has some chipping with loss to the top of the spine, and the cloth is splitting and fraying at the top half of the front hinge. It is otherwise clean and in good order with just light wear at corners and edges. Internally the original endpapers are present and the contents are complete. The plates are tissue-guarded and very clean. The text (and endpapers) have light spotting. The Glossary and Index have been bound slightly out of order, with some Glossary pages in the Index and vice versa - but they are complete.

London : Harrison and Co , 1785 A rare and beautiful introduction to natural history. In 2 folio volumes with 99 (of 100) hand coloured plates by Moses Harris and others after his style. Martyn is a pseudonym for William Fordyce Mavor, who authored a wide range of works. The books are set out alphabetically, with the plates reflecting this classification, so they can portray lizards and lynx side by side on the same plate. The pages are double column and unpaginated. The text for each animal is thoughtfully put together eg for the guinea pig 'The Guinea-Pig is a very cleanly creature and totally different from that that affords it a name....Guinea-Pigs repose on their bellies, pretty much in their usual posture...'. The plates are nicely coloured and the ones by Moses Harris (butterflies, moths and shells) are particularly well drawn. This copy is in a contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards.
