Clean pages except for very occasional smudges, sparse foxing, and some toning beginning around the margins, as well as a prior owner's label affixed discreetly to the front free endpaper; the binding is gently relaxed, but secure; the full cloth hard cover bears a short tear at the spine head and thin lines of material loss at both spine ends, darkening of the spine and its gilt titles, and some edgewear around free corners, otherwise sound. x, 304pp. incl. index; b/w photo illus. A military surveyor with some background in the Classics later found fault with Belloc's conclusions about the route of this Roman road from London to Chichester, but the descriptions are no less compelling.
