Sobre este artículo

Calcutta. April 1823. FIRST EDITION. Sm folio. (28 x 22 cm.). title, 1ll. and pp.59+[1, errata]+xx. (lacking two leaves, pp 9-12, which are now supplied in photocopy) Bound in later reversed calf (suede) with oval armorial stamp Forte Scutum Salus Ducum (Earl Fortescue) in gilt to upper cover, vertical red label with gilt lettering to spine. Intermittent slight spotting and browning but generally very good in an attractive binding. Buckingham, author of Travels in Palestine, 1821, et alia, was a pioneering journalist who fought for a liberal press in India. He founded the Calcutta Journal, in 1818. This venture at first proved highly successful, but in 1823 the paper's outspoken criticisms of the East India Company led to the expulsion of Buckingham from India and to the suppression of the paper by John Adam, the acting governor-general in 1823. Rare, only two copies on Copac (BL and Cambridge)
