Woodcut surrounds to title page, decorative initials on pages 130, 223 and 244, woodcut vignette on final page. Covers worn and scuffed, with some chipping to the extremities, old paper labels on spine with hand numbering, hinges internally cracked but covers well attached, text block sound, front free endpaper and first leaf detached but present, occasional light foxing, a few spots and minor insect damage to the first four leaves, minor dampstaining to the top margins of several pages near the end of the book, more extensive dampstaining to final leaf. A piracy may have been published in the same year. Estienne woodcut device on title (a philosopher standing at the foot of the Tree of Knowledge, and the motto "noli altum sapere.") The idea for this book stemmed from a conversation between the printer, Henri Estienne, who was known for his erudition, and King Henri III, the dedicatee. The King had asked why Italy, rather than France, claimed the most and best Ciceronian Latinists. Hardcover, 1554 Paris edition. Condition is very good. 19th century full leather binding, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Paginates by leaves (1 leaf=2 pages): 127, plus 1 leaf index. 2 blanks front and back look like they are from the old rebind. Title page and last page of index are pages with the most wear: title page has old ownership stamp, and a few stains. All other pages are near fine or fine. Paper is excellent quality: supple, lightly toned, not fragile. Binding is sound. Front blank endpaper has two inscriptions in Spanish. One is dated April 23, 1880. The other is earlier and signed by Alfredo Chavero (same as ownership stamp). No other writing or markings. A small book approximately 4.5 x 3.25 inches. And just so you know: the English translation of the title is my own and could be completely wrong.

1582 Alexander Neville Kett's Rebellion Norfolk England Edward VI Norfolciensium

Alexander Neville was a 16th-century scholar known for his studies in antiquities. His portfolio of works isn't as extensive as other English scholars from this era; however, his work 'Furoribus Norfolcensium Ketto Duce' is considered the best work on Kett's Rebellion of 1549.
Kett's Rebellion took place in Norfolk, when Edward VI's forces suppressed Robert Kett and his rebels who were destroying fences of wealthy property owners. Neville frustrated many Welsh readers who took offense to Neville calling Welsh soldiers 'lazy sheep'.

Edizione del 1548 di questa nota opera letteraria scritta da Adriano Castellesi (ca 1485-1521) nato a Corneto (antico nome di Tarquinia) detto anche Adriano da Corneto. Castellesi fu grechista, ebraista, autore di poemetti, opere di stile, grammatiche e filosofico-teologiche. Espertissimo di affari, si arricchì enormemente destando in tal modo l'invidia di Cesare Borgia che tentò di avvelenarlo. Andato in esilio e ritornato in patria all'avvento di Leone X, dovette ritornarvi perchè accusato di aver preso parte alla congiura del Cardinale Petrucci. Da questo momento in poi non si sa più nulla di lui: sembra che sia stato assassinato a scopo di furto da uno dei suoi servitori. Il volume è un'opera didattica latina che riporta termini utilizzati in sentenze classiche latine. Quarto, pp [22], 559, (21), the title page with an engraved woodut printer's device is slightly creased and is lightly marked and toned with two slight rust stains and the remains of two small labels - the one on the recto in red and partially removed, the second probably on the verso and completely removed but both have left the paper very thin at these points; otherwise the text is remarkably clean and without any major marks or stains. The date appears on the printer's colophon at the rear, and the verso has another version of the woodcut printer's device. Recently bound in full panelled speckled calf, with simple gilt decoration, the spine with plain raised bands and a morocco label, plain endpapers. RARE. Quarto (25x16cm) original blind-stamped vellum with central embossed image of Christ surrounded by female images titled SPES, spine on 4 cords (spine splitting but well held by cords, vellum very darkened). Title page with ownership inscription (? Daniel Bower) dated 1698, [664] leaves ([par]8 A-FFff8 4G4 HHhh-NNnn8 OOoo4), last page blank. Marginal numbers, not column numeration, are probably references to the unabridged Stephanus Thesaurus. *Abridged edition of Henri Estienne's Thesaurus Graecae linguae, compiled by Johann Scapula. The printer Guillaume Laimarie was active in Geneva 1578-1598.
