It was by devious means that Clyde Batchelor had realized his dream of possessing a mansion on the Mississippi modelled after the style of the floating palaces which had hitherto represented the acme of elegance and beauty to him. In Steamboat Gothic Mrs Keyes tells not only the story of the plantations, but of the river which contributed so largely to their prosperity, prstige and splendour. Furthermore, she reveals how land and stream, mansion and packet, were all part of the same pattern of the loves and lives of the men and women who peopled them. But in the last analysis, this is a love story, one of the most tender and moving. A marvelous period piece and well worth reading.
