[New York: The Intimate Gallery], 17 April 1927.. [4]pp. Folded leaflet, 28 x 21.7cm. Fine. First edition. An important document in the history of The Intimate Gallery and John Marin's career, being Stieglitz's own sortie into the fray of opinion surrounding the sale of a group of Marin's paintings to Duncan Phillips in December of 1926. In brief, Stieglitz told several intimates that Phillips had paid $6,000 for Marin's BACK OF BEAR MOUNTAIN. Word leaked out to the public, Phillips claimed that the figure was inaccurate, and he and Stieglitz exchanged assertions and denials. The entire episode is summarized on pp.282-3 of Lowe's STIEGLITZ A MEMOIR / BIOGRAPHY.

The first monograph devoted to Steichen's work, and included in Roth's The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century: "Sandburg's folksy modesty is a bit at odds with the solemnity and sumptuousness of the book itself, which includes a broad and cleverly sequenced array of Steichen's work handsomely printed in warm sepia tones". New York: Harcourt Brace, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. Number 901 from an edition of only 925 copies. The first major monograph on Steichen. A stunning production which shows the wide range of his talents and includes portraiture, abstractions and pastoral scenes. A clean and tight near fine copy in cloth boards and with some very faint scattered foxing to the page edges in an about very good example of the scarce tissue jacket that is also foxed and with a number of chips and tears. Lacking the very scarce slipcase. Signed by both Steichen and Sandburg on the limitation page. A very nice copy of this classic. (Roth 54-57) This is a heavy and oversized book and will require extra shipping.

Descripción:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
