An important document in the history of The Intimate Gallery and John Marin's career, being Stieglitz's own sortie into the fray of opinion surrounding the sale of a group of Marin's paintings to Duncan Phillips in December of 1926. In brief, Stieglitz told several intimates that Phillips had paid $6,000 for Marin's BACK OF BEAR MOUNTAIN. Word leaked out to the public, Phillips claimed that the figure was inaccurate, and he and Stieglitz exchanged assertions and denials. The entire episode is summarized on pp.282-3 of Lowe's STIEGLITZ A MEMOIR / BIOGRAPHY.

An off-printing of Muir's article from THE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER (London, 28 Nov. 1923), produced for promotional purposes by Stieglitz, probably during the Intimate Gallery years.

A good copy only: the extreme lower forecorners are a bit creased and occasionally ragged; the front wrapper has the lower extreme fore- corner chipped away and, there is a short tear near the toe of the spine resulting in the loss of the extreme lower spine corner of the lower wrapper and last leaf; there is a small chip in the lower wrapper at the spine crown; there is an 11 cm internally mended tear in the rear wrapper up from the lower edge and another internally mended 7 cm tear in the fore-edge, each with small chips associated; and one panel of the enormous center four panel gatefold is neatly separated along the fold; still, a reasonably good copy of an issue seldom found in ideal condition. Introductory text, in French, folded sheets, with 24 loose plates, in a paper-covered salmon chemise with off-white paper label, white cloth spine and cloth ties [spine and ties a little aged]. Light wear at corners, tiny area of bumping to upper tips, interior paper of spine is split, but exterior is sound; plates are immaculate and undamaged. No names or marks. Scarce.
