[The colophon is dated Florence, 1579, but the dedication to Francesco de Medici, is dated April 15, 1580.] 1st edition. Small 4to, 1/2 vellum and purple boards, inked title on spine.[38] 829 [1] pp. Text in Italian. Buoninsegni was a Florentine patrician, merchan t and historian. Politically he held some of the city's most impo rtant offices and was a member of the broader circle of the early Medici regime. He spent the last ten years of his life completin g this Historia Florentine; he died in Florence in March of 1466. The history existed only in manuscript form until its publicatio n in nine volumes between 1579-1637. This 1579-80 edition consist s of the first four books available, bound as one, and covers the history of Florence to 1421. The last two volumes, as well as th e first complete set, were not published until 1637. Good. Severa l vintage inked signatures and notes inside front cover, end pape rs. Small bookplate inside front cover. The original title page i s missing and is replaced by a handwritten, inked annotation date d Torino, 1861. The rest of the text block is clean, tight, and b right with no foxing but occasional page toning -- several pages have vintage inked corrections in the margins. .
