Sobre este artículo

Florence: Bartolommeo Sermartelli, 1584. Very Good. Quarto (22 cm); [16], 390, [18] pages. Title page with the crest of Cardinal Alessandro dei Medici, archbishop of Florence, with cardinal headgear and drapery printed in red. Woodcut initials and ornaments. In contemporary stiff vellum, leather label titled in gilt flaking away. Vellum frayed at crown. Front hinge splitting. Old stamp, illegible, on title page. Shelf label mounted to front pastedown. Yet a clean, sound copy, relatively free of foxing or blemishes (except toning of final few leaves). References: Haym, I, 105, #7; Gamba 1532 (quoting Poggiali: "Da alcuni vien preferita questa seconda impressione alla prima; a noi sembra opportuno l'averle ambedue...."); Fontanini II, 238.

A version of Nardi's text came out in Lyon in 1582. The first Florentine edition, offered here, differs from the Lyonnaise printing in several respects: dropping a "discourse on the city of Lyon" and a "catalogue of the gonfalonieri" (that is, effectively, mayors of Florence), this second edition adds an index of notable events, chapter summaries, and an introductory essay on historiography called "instructions and rules for reading history tidily" (Regola et instruzione [sic] da tenersi nel leggere l'istorie ordinatamente).

Sobre Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio

Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
