Sobre este artículo

NY: Putnam Adult, 1995. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Inscribed and signed by all three authors on the front free endpaper: "To John Hoffer, with warmest regards, Paul Ehrlich, Anne Ehrlich, & Gretchen Dailey." The inscription is in Paul Ehrlich's hand, but each author has signed. Uncommon signed, with no other copies available online as of this writing. "In this provocative book, the Ehrlich's, joined by a brilliant young scientist, Gretchen Daily, look at the interaction between population and food supply ... They offer a powerful and radical strategy for balancing human numbers with nutritional needs, a major element of which is improvement of the status of women."

Paul Ehrlich is best known for his deeply influential and controversial book The Population Bomb (1968), which he co-authored with his wife Anne Ehrlich though she wasn't recognized for it. The book is about overpopulation and resource scarcity, a topic which has defined their career and perhaps overshadowed Paul Ehrlich's distinguished achievements in ecology and conservation biology (including classic butterfly studies). The book was called alarmist by some, but Paul Ehrlich years later said that "perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much too optimistic about the future."

Gretchen C. Daily is the Bing Professor of Environmental Science and the Director of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford, where she was a colleague of the Ehrlichs before they retired. A tropical ecologist, she is known for her cutting edge work in "countryside biogeography" which studies the joint "fates of populations, species, and ecosystems in 'countrysides,'" i.e. unbuilt but human-impacted landscapes. She is the winner of a number of international awards for her work, including The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, the Volvo Environment Prize, the Blue Planet Prize, and others.

A very near fine book in a like jacket, both with just a touch of bumping to their corners.

Sobre Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
