The very First Book in the beloved series set in Victorian England featuring Doctor Dolittle, whose favorite patients are animals. This is a later (20th) printing of the FIRST BRITISH EDITION from Stokes, first published in 1920 (this one, 1927), in 180 pages, with the author's original frontispiece, 30 other black-and-white illustrations, & 2 full-page glossy plates throughout the text. Hardcover small 8vo has light orange cloth-covered boards decorated with sea creatures & a colorful paper pastedown to front cover, lettered in (heavily faded) gilt to front & spine. Condition is only Fair: boards soiled & fading, many pages show random soil spots or dogeared corners. Two pages had some scribbling, erased, no other writing or marks. Binding secure, but shaken, stitching loosening. Front pastedown is bright & colorful. Heavy rubbing to extremities & edgewear all around, with some cloth fraying in places. Page 95-96 is completely missing, all other 178 pages intact. Hinges cracked. Protected in 2.5 mil clear mylar cover Free! The Story of Doctor Dolittle is a 1920 book about Doctor John Dolittle and his animals. This book is the first in a series of children's books by Hugh Lofting. Doctor Dolittle is a doctor who can speak with the animals in their own languages. He starts treating animals instead of human patients.
