In the early 1920s of northwest Alaska, a handful of older Inupiat women have chosen to pass the darkest days of winter in good company. The ladies of the Storytellers' Club gather in a sod home to talk, drawn on scraps of brown paper, and sip on tea. Each is a rare vessel holding a trove of stories - some given by her ancestors; others from within her lifetime. In a time and place where as yet no alphabet exists for their language, the women practice picture-writing as they talk, and the stories are recorded in their most elemental form.
