A Publication of the Texas Folklore Society. The topics include Texas place names, Roy Bean, anecdotes from Brazos River bottoms, Mexican ghosts from El Paso, comedy in folk superstitions, witching for water with the Bible, pioneer folk ways, old sayings from Texas, Irish fairies in Texas, Alabama Indian music, and tales from the Alabamas.

Called the "Storyteller of the Southwest," James Frank Dobie was born in 1888 on his family's cattle ranch in Live Oak County. During his long life, J. Frank Dobie would live astride two worlds: a rugged life on a Texas cattle ranch and the state's modern centers of scholarly learning. By the late 1920s, Dobie discovered his mission: to record and publicize the disappearing folklore of Texas and the greater Southwest. Dobie became secretary of the Texas Folklore Society, a position he held for 21 years.

Sobre River House Books

"Beautiful books at great prices." I've collected lovely old books and rare first editions for years. Hope you find something that interests you. I want to send these beauties to a happy home. Hope that's yours!

I found hundreds of nice dust jackets with no books to cover. Need one for your library? Have a look at that category!

Have some dust jackets to sell? Drop me a line!

I ship domestically in the US using the Post Office and internationally using consolidation services. Books are always wrapped then packed in cardboard boxes with padding to protect the contents. International shipments are double boxed with shipping paperwork attached to the outside of the box using a special envelope. And a complete duplicate of all the paperwork packed inside the outer box in case the attached set wanders off.

Previous international shipments to Austria, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Spain, Sweden, UK --> Help me fill in my international bingo card!
