A smart copy of volume IV of George Newnes' 'The Strand Magazine', lavishly illustrated with vignette photographs and illustrations throughout the text. Featuring part of Arthur Conan Doyle's novel 'The Tragedy of the Korosko'. The Strand Magazine ran 711 issues between 1891 and 1950, and was founded by George Newnes. It comprised short fiction and articles regarding general fiction, and was immediately popular, circulating around half a million copies a month from the 1890s into the 1930s. Arthur Conan Doyle"s "Sherlock Holmes" saw their first publication in The Strand, as well as short stories by writers such as Agatha Christie and P. G. Wodehouse.Featuring chapter IV of Conan Doyle's 'Tragedy of the Korosko'.With contributors including Bret Harte, Mary Angela Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle and Grant Allen, and illustrators including Sidney Paget, H. R. Millar, Gordon Browne, Warwick Goble and Paul Hardy, to name a few.George Newnes (1851-1910) is considered a founding father of popular journalism; he was also a Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party for twenty years.Covering the period of July to December 1897.Illustrated throughout the text with vignette engravings by various hands. In a contemporary full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with a few scattered marks to the boards, slight bumping to the extremities and some wear to the front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
