"Exalted in the nineteenth century as virtuous exemplars of a prod pioneering spirit, and condemned in the twentieth as crude oppressors of a peaceful Native people, the Pilgrims' unavoidable importance in the narrative of Americans is reinforced annually in Thanksgiving Da's mythic commemorations."
