London: Published by Authority of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty; Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1831. THE STREETER COPY: See "The Celebrated Collection of Americana formed by the Late Thomas Winthrop Streeter, ... Volume Six ... New York: Park-Bernet Galleries Inc., 1969." Sixteenth Session, Tuesday, April 22nd. Item No. 3517. Two volumes. The so-called Admiralty edition in a quarto format, preceding the octavo edition of the same year, 28.5 cm., untrimmed. Original brown cloth, paper spine labels. Inscribed on inside front covers: "From the Author." and "The Gift of the Author." Armorial bookplates of Sir Henry Hotham and his son, Beaumont Hotham, and signatures of latter dated 1885, and with Streeter's tiny oval plate with his initials. Sir Henry Hotham was a vice-admiral, who, in 1831, was appointed Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean and on 4 July 1831 was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. Overall, a wonderful, clean set with a great provenance. Sabin 4347; Hill (2) 93; Hill (1) p.19: "Captain Beechey, near Point Barrow, Alaska, and Sir John Franklin had arrived within fifty leagues of each other when the latter was compelled by weather to return. Beechey's book is one of the most valuable of modern voyages and relates to extensive visits to Pitcairn Island, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Society Islands and Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, Macao, Okinawa, and the coast of California. His book provides an important account of Monterey and San Francisco before the American conquest and gives his impressions of the missionaries in San Francisco. Beechey describes the Eskimos of the north and relates his meeting with John Adams, last survivor of the mutiny on the "Bounty", who gave Beechey a lengthy account. In the course of his voyage, Beechey discovered several islands in the Pacific." . SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good. Quarto.

Descripción:
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1859. First Edition of this fascinating record of the western travels of one of the most famous nineteenth century Canadian painters. Inspired by George Catlin, whom he met during a visit to Europe, Kane determined to sketch and paint a series of pictures illustrative of North American Indians and scenery. He set out for the west in June of 1845, "with no companions but [his] portfolio and box of paints, [his] gun, and a stock of ammunition", spending the season in the Lake Huron and Lake Michigan region, chiefly among the Ojibway. For the next three years, he travelled further westward, mostly in company with Hudson’s Bay Company fur trade brigades, through the territories of the Red River settlements and the valley of the Saskatchewan, across the Rocky Mountains, down the Columbia to Puget Sound, and north to Vancouver Island. Kane brought back hundreds of detailed sketches: portraits of Indian chiefs, warriors, and medicine men, buffalo… Leer más

Descripción:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
