Since its publication in 1968, The Study of American Folklore has remained the text of choice for introductory folklore courses, providing students with a comprehensive and engaging survey of the field. The Fourth Edition, thoroughly revised and updated by the distinguished folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand, maintains the popular organization of previous editions and adds new features to reflect the needs of today's courses.
Written expressly for the introductory undergraduate course, The Study of American Folklore provides students with solid and succinct definitions, illuminating and engaging examples, and up-to-date resources for further reading, all framed within an organization that is flexible and teachable.
New to the Fourth Edition are 67 "Focus" points that offer students in-depth examples of folk genres, research methods, and theoretical approaches. Designed to spur student discussion and research, "Focus" points are accompanied by questions and project suggestions. Sample topics include "Feminist Folklore Fieldwork," "Folk Poetry on the Internet," and "Making a Palmetto Hat." A list of all "Focus" points can be found on the back cover.
In addition, 70 black-and-white photographs have been added to the Fourth Edition to aid student understanding; they are especially useful for the study of material and performative folk traditions.

JAN HAROLD BRUNVAND, who received his Ph.D. in Fultlare from Indiana University under Richard Dotson, is Professor Emeritus of English at the University of Utah, where he has taught since 1966. A former president of the American Folklore Society, Professor Brunvand has held various editorships, including that of the Journal of American Folklore. He is as internationally recognized authority on urban legends and has written several books on the subject, including The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends and Their Meanings and The Baby Train and Other Lusty Urban Legends (both available from W W Norton). Professor Brunvand is also General Editor of the monumental compendium of the field, American Folklore: An Encyclopedia, published in 1996.
