Suburbia fu uno dei più popolari e riusciti fotolibri americani degli anni Settanta. Bill Owens fotografò il suo vicinato in un paese della California, lasciando che fossero gli stessi personaggi fotografati a parlare. Infatti riportò sottoforma di didascalie le brevi frasi pronunciate dai suoi soggetti, che con poche parole riuscivano ad esprimere moltissimo: ''Siamo molto felici. I nostri bambini sono in salute, mangiamo buon cibo e abbiamo una casa davvero accogliente''. Nato come un progetto personale svolto mentre Owens lavorava per un giornale californiano locale e seguiva un corso di antropologia visiva, questo fotolibro dimostra perfettamente che per i documentari di stampo sociologico testo e immagini funzionino molto meglio che le immagini da sole.
