The author was Piotr Feliksovich Maevsky (1851-1892). Significant edgewear to cover, internally sound with minimal tanning of paper. Owner's signature and oil spot on ffep (M. Kirshbaum?), another on end paper (V. Rikovshky?) with oaktree bookplate of Heino Ross. Spine sl. frayed at top edge, some insect damage to glued areas. The text contains keys to genera and species, generic descriptions and Russian and Latin names of genera and species, summaries of distribution (by local government region) and habitat, flowering times, and selected line drawings mostly showing both the whole plant and flowers or fruits. A compact yet comprehensive flora which went through several editions, a third (edited by B. Fedchenko) in 1902 and another in 1917, an 8th (with a slightly different title) in 1954 and a 9th (edited by B.K. Shishkin) in 1964.… Leer más

Benjamin Maund (1790-1864) botanist and horticulturist, "he prospered as a bookseller, stationer, printer, bookbinder, publisher, and chemist in a combination normal for the time". Text is tanned and clean, folding map has minor archival tape repair and is in very sound condition. Author's descriptions of the country, it's culture, its agriculture including a discussion of the farming of the Ruta Baga. He crtiicizes at length Morris Birkbeck's settlement in Illinois. Paris: Philippe-Denys Pierres, 1782. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good+. Hardcover 1st, a very nice copy in contemporary leather. Mottled leather with triple-rule border, dentelles, marbled endpapers, edges gilted over red stain, giving a coppery effect. All text pages are bright, straight and clean. The gilted edges are a bit dulled, as is the gilt-stamped spine. Corners bumped and worn; there is a gilt rule on the very edge of the boards, and it is rubbed or broken in numerous places. Overall vg+ despite the wear on the binding. Engraved frontis and title vignette; different from the vignette in the Valade-Cazin edition published later the same year. A poem outlining the author's philosophy of outdoor design, this book was terribly popular and went through many printings and translations very quickly. It was a major influence on British garden design which can still be detected today. 143 pp. French text.

A fine atlas of medicinal plants in coloured colllotype, based on early color photograph of plants. A technique rarely applied. See Nissen, BBI, 1 252 ff. The text for the foreign platns was supplied by author's brother, Max, the director of the botanical garden at München. -- (Cancelled library stamp on title and preface; lower corner of title very slightly damaged).
