On April 27, 1865, the Sultana, a 260 ft., wooden hulled steamboat exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis killing 1800 of its 2400 passengers who were mostly Union soldiers on their way home from Confederate prison camps. This book is the first comprehensive study of the disaster and brings to light the cause of the explosion, and the investigation and cover-up which followed. A clean very presentable copy.
