New York: Harpers, 1934. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First American edition. Slight scrape to the front fly else fine in attractive, near fine dustwrapper with a mild scratch on the spine. Elizabethan thriller-romance set in the author's beloved Sussex, and like most of those novels revolving around the Alward family: Kate Alward, a young woman forced to dress as a man to flee religious persecution. A subject close to the author's heart, she and her Anglican rector husband both converted to Catholicism. Kaye-Smith is much underrated and her Sussex novels have been occasionally compared to Hardy's Wessex novels.
