"Certainly Bob Saunders, 'Surly Bob,' as he was styled by his companions, was not an attractive boy. The Sunday scholars at St. Chad's School were as a rule rather a rough, ill-looking, and unruly set of lads; but foremost among them all was Bob, who distinguished himself by being more rough, ill-looking, and unruly than the rest. Bob was always looked upon as the black sheep in the class; not that he was the only black one there, but that he was considered to be of deeper dye than the others......." --------- from Chapter I. (In School).
