In this important volume on the Nazi occupation of France, the author shows how the active persecution of Jews was done with the active collusion of the Vichy government's police and administration systems. The initial indifference to the plight of the Jews by the French people is discussed, along with the change that came about in 1942 when they realized that deported Jews were being sent to their deaths. Also looked at frankly is the blind faith of those Jews who hoped to avoid death by assimilating themselves into the Nazi world. A major aspect of the book is the survival (at time of publication) of Alois Brunner, a Nazi living at that time in Syria, who was responsible for the deaths of 128,500 people, most of them French Jews, including many children.
