Type: Hard Back First Edition Handsome Hardcover Book in Near Fine Condition with a Very Good Dust Jacket. . Heavy solid book, 7" x 2.5" x 9.75", 599 pages. Navy textured quarter cloth with gilt double line panel, gilt circle within, gilt titles-very nice design; boards with brown tweed-like cloth with double gilt border, gilt outlined navy circle with gilt titles within. Bright and sharp and spotless. Endpapers in swirl design on browns. Rough cut. Tight sewn binding. Only defects are former owner brief inscription on back of endpaper, slight scuffing of lower front corner and minimal spotting on top and bottom edge of textblock. The whole marvelous story of the Glorious Age of passenger ships, beginning in 1818 and ending 150 years later. All the liners whose histories endowed them with the charisma of personalities are here: The Ile de France, The Lusitania, The Olympic, The Arctic, The Titanic, The Kronprinzessin Cecile(loaded with gold and millionaires and pursued by British destroyers--), the Mauretania, the Queen Elizabeth and The Queen Mary. And also there are episodes in the lives of personalities who enjoyed these transatlantic voyages--Ralph Waldo Emerson, Marlene Dietrich, Vanderbilt, Thomas Wolfe, to name a few the reader will meet on-board.
