First US edition, hardcover, 1897. Condition is Good: Boards show wear, paper of front hinge cracked with neat repairs, hinge and binding are holding fine. Old pencil ownership signature, scattered foxing and smudges, no vandalism or tears. Decorative endpapers. Each chapter has decorative headpiece which is part of the charm. Cool shelf presence. Paginates: blank, (1)-297, [4], blank, with frontis and 5 plates. Last page states; "Edinburgh: Printed by W. & R. Chambers, Ltd." Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Although there are a few copies listed for sale this is a surprisingly uncommon book. WorldCat locates only one physical copy of this US edition. See OCLC: 1077911264. The 1896 UK edition is the first and most common edition. Several reprint editions exist.
