Of particular interest to American Episcopalians due to the influence of that church in the founding of the American Church and the compilation of its BCP.

London. 1787. 8vo. vii, 512pp, 3pp publisher's adverts. Later full calf, spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, blind tooling, leather label and gilt lettering. Signature to title page. The first work by Price, Richard (1723 - 1791) FRS, philosopher, demographer, and political radical. He studied under Vavasor Griffiths at Chancefield, Talgarth. His writings in defence of the American patriots led to an invitation to advise congress conveyed to him by Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee, and John Adams. A member of the intellectual societies the Bowood Group and Benjamin Franklin's 'Club of Honest Whigs'. The journal Enlightenment and Dissent remains a focus for the study of Price's thought. This is his first work: the third edition, being greatly enlarged.

Earlier owner's clipped signature (Abraham Varick) pasted onto ffep. Bound in full green leather with owner's name in gilt stamped on cover, "ABM. VARICK JUNr." Covers with blind tooling and gilt spine lettering. Corners rounded. Abraham Varick was a successful financier prominent in Utica and Oswego area banking and manufacturing ventures, including the Varick Canal, who also served as a director of the American Tract Society. Coated stock end papers suggest the son had his father's book rebound in the 1850s.

A very good early American printing of this standard, in a nice American binding.

A few pages with neat ink marginalia, including drawings and decorations in a near contemporary hand. Paper backing spine and endpapers are near contemporary Spanish leaves relating to St. Francis of Assisi. Front pastedown with bookseller's label "W.W. Blake/Old Book Specialist/16 De Septiembre 13/Mexico City, Mex." Title page with old ownership inscriptions, including Antonio Mendez. Last four leaves with closed tears to lower margins affecting several lines of text. Bound in contemporary full limp vellum with remains of two ties now lacking.
