Pierce was the first Bishop of Arkansas and one of the clergy deputies to the Meeting of Bishops, Clergymen, and Laymen, of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States at Montgomery, Ala., on July 3-6, 1861, and a member of the committee that drafted the Constitutions and Cannons of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States.
