Born in Naples, he was orphaned by the age of four, and brought up by his uncle Hammond who had sailed with Fitzroy aboard "The Beagle". He lived and travelled throughout South America, and was recognised by the RGS for his contributions to the geographical knowledge of the continent.
His wife Mary is the ' Mary ' of Byron's poem, 'The Dream.'

Solo se imprimieron 7 pliegos y la publicación fue interrumpida pues el padre Champion se pronunciaba en favor del obispo y en contra de sus hermanos en religión. En 1767 al abate Toussaint , en posesión del manuscrito original de Champion , escribió este libro modificando el estilo del antiguo manuscrito e insertando algunos documentos. Obra útil para conocer las querellas que dieron tanta celebridad a Palafox y que han impedido su canonización. Se publicaron 13 ediciones entre 1767 y 1772.

"Translated by an American Gentleman," Washington Irving, and this happens to be his first book. Illustrated with a large (26-1/2" x 17-3/4") folded map in the first volume - the map has been repaired (please see photos) in the upper right hands corner. The binding is sound on these antique books - the pages are age toned but in good condition, with foxing heavier in Vol 2 (particularly at the front of the book) than 1. The boards of Vol. 2 are slightly bowed and there's a fair amount of quill pen names and notes in the front and back of that volume.
