Sobre este artículo
First impression of the first edition, without the modification of the title page and last 2 sheets. According to Guaita (461), only the modified copies were delivered to the public. The modification is evidenced by the existence of the so called "duplicate copies", the only ones which still contain the initial print of the last sheet of the book as in our copy, in parallel with the modified reprint of the last two sheets. These are part of the edition already shared with Nicolas Buon, published the same year, but after the initial printing, done by Berjon (see Guaita's double copy, printed by Buon and ex. Ouvaroff, double, printed by Berjon). Our copy contains only the first print of the last sheet, where the text is finished on line 25-e on page 568 with the words "font des malefices". The duplicate copies also contain this sheet and, in addition, the reprint made later of this last sheet, that is to say the final version, where the text resumes at line 25-e with "qui me fait conclure", and continues until the middle of page 569, with page 570 blank (see Caillet, quoting the copy of Ouvaroff). Only the copies containing the rewritten version of the last pages (567 - 570) were delivered to the public (see copy BNF or Lyon), therefore with the collation giving 570 pages instead of 568, and non-duplicates, which is why the duplicate copies are in their turn almost impossible to find. In the final version of the last pages, the sentence before the text to resume in the middle of page 568 ends with "qui font des malefices" on the 25th line, and not as in this original print, which contains only three words: " font des malefices" on the 25th line (see photo). In addition, the word "FIN" is missing from the original print on the last sheet (page 568). Also, the title page is different from that of the first definitive edition given by Berjon to the public (which is also of utmost rarity, with only 3 copies in worldcat: Lyon, BNF and Newberry Chicago, the last two searched by the author of the translation of the book in English). In our copy the title ends with: "de la Sorcelerie et sorciers" while in the common edition it is: "des Sorciers et de la Sorcelerie". In turn, the subtitle is: " LIVRE TRES-CURIEUX ET TRES-utile " while the common print bear the title:" LIVRE TRES UTILE ET NECES-saire". No copy of the Berjon edition is listed in the bibliographies or recorded in worldcat with this title and subtitle. Also, the place of publication is reversed in the sentence with the street: "Chez Jean Berjon, au Cheval volant, rue S. Jean de Beauvais" compared with the other known copies. Speckled calf binding XVIII century, with triple framing on the covers, richly decorated back, edges red. Exceptional wide margins copy, very well preserved, and printed on good quality paper, of De Lancre's Magnum Opus on demonic eroticism, witches sabbath and lycanthropy. The work contains two folding plates, not part of the collation (as is well known, the first edition contains no plate), one with the sabbath of Bartholomaeus Sprangler in the first print, with watermak, engraved by chisel, signed Crespy, according to Gillot de Givry: "the best representation of the Sabbath", the other with a necromancer torturing his victims - two men linked to a revolving device (Est ce un enchantment?). Etching by Claude Gillot which was finished with chisel after his death by Jean Audran (Populus, 1930, n. 9). Bibliography: only Caillet and Vinson give the ed. of 1612 by Berjon, but it is the Ouvaroff duplicate copy for Caillet, and a copy of the common ed, indicated as "rare" for Vinson (36 leaves, 569 and 24 p, index). Guaita (460) Labadie (2002), Soulice (3717), Dorbon, gives only the ed of Buon. Brunet don't mention.
