In the early 1520s a young Italian artist Giulio Romano created a set of 16 erotic images  of various sexual positions  known as I Modi (the positions). The images were at first privately distributed, then made public; it was when the illustrations were made public that the authorities began to consider the engravings obscene and threatening even to the point of jailing the engraver. " ... The book is generously illustrated includes full translations of the infamous sonnets that Pietro Aretino wrote to accompany I modi. Exploring such issues as censorship, religious teachings about, and the influence of antique culture, Taking Positions is a major contribution to our understanding of the erotic in Renaissance culture."  from the rear panel blurb.
