Arthur Henry "Sarsfield" Ward (1883 - 1959), aka "Sax Rohmer," was a prolific English novelist. He is best remembered for his series of 15 novels featuring the master criminal Dr. Fu Manchu.<br /> <br /> TALES OF CHINATOWN (1922) collects 10 short stories originally published in hardcover by Cassell in 1922 and Doubleday, Page and Company in 1922. All of the stories first appeared in magazine format. <br /> <br /> "Tchériapin" is one of Rohmer's best tales and has often been anthologised. He rewrote and reset "Hand of the White Sheikh" [aka "The Mystery of the Shriveled Hand"] as "The Hand of the Mandarin Quong" for this book.<br /> <br /> UNCOMMON edtion. Wear to front cover colour plate and cloth. The B&W frontispiece retains good definition and is without foxing but is starting to separate from the title oage. Pages uniformly age toned.
Sinopsis
In the saloon bar of a public-house, situated only a few hundred yards from the official frontier of Chinatown, two men sat at a small table in a corner, engaged in earnest conversation. They afforded a sharp contrast. One was a thick-set and rather ruffianly looking fellow, not too cleanly in either person or clothing, and, amongst other evidences that at one time he had known the prize ring, possessing a badly broken nose.
