New York, NY: The Limited Editions Club, 1944., 1944.. Fine. - Large octavo, 10-1/4 inches high by 6-3/4 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in brown cloth titled in gilt on the spine and on the front cover with a raised gilt image of a gold nugget. The book is laid into the original glassine dust wrapper and a gold clamshell box. The top edge is gilt. The box is slightly rubbed with wear to the box's front joint. xii, [4] & 223 pages plus colophon, illustrated by Fletcher Martin with 14 half-page and 14 full-page color drawings, one of each for the 14 stories. Fine in a very good clamshell box.

The colophon reads: "Of this edition of TALES OF THE GOLD RUSH twelve hundred copies have been made for the members of The Limited editions Club from the illustrations of Fletcher Martin who here signs.... This copy which is number 1064."

The work is a collection of 14 stories by Bret Harte selected with the assistance of Oscar Lewis who wrote an introduction. The following stories are included: "The Luck of Roaring Camp", "The Outcasts of Poker Flat", "Miggles", "Tennessee's Partner", "Brown of Calaveras", "The Idyl of Red Gulch", "The Iliad of Sandy Bar", "The Poet of Sierra Flat", "How Santa Claus Came to Simpson's Bar", "An Apostle of the Tules", "An Ingenue of the Sierras", "A Protegee of Jack Hamlin's", "Prosper's 'Old Mother'".
