Sobre este artículo
First Edition of Conrad's fourth book and his first collection of short stories (including "An Outpost of Progress," a Congo tale along the same vein as his later "Heart of Darkness"). This was issued about ten days before the London edition, and consisted of 1,250 copies. TALES OF UNREST was not a big seller in America: Scribner did not print a second and third impression (250 copies each) until 1906 and 1912; after the success of CHANCE in 1914, they printed 250 + 260 more copies in 1915, before selling the rights, the plates, and the unbound sheets to Doubleday Page the following year. We consider this one of the scarcer Conrad American editions; when it does turn up the volume's spine is usually severely darkened. This is a near-fine copy (spine design slightly dull, but not as bad as usual); the volume is otherwise essentially without wear. Supino A4.1.0; Cagle A4b. Provenance: discreet bookplate of the Conrad bibliographer David J. Supino.
Sinopsis
Of the five stories in this volume, The Lagoon, the last in order, is the earliest in date. It is the first short story I ever wrote and marks, in a manner of speaking, the end of my first phase, the Malayan phase with its special subject and its verbal suggestions. Conceived in the same mood which produced Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands, it is told in the same breath (with what was left of it, that is, after the end of An Outcast), seen with the same vision, rendered in the same method - if such a thing as method did exist then in my conscious relation to this new adventure of writing for print.
