Garnett's career as a screenwriter started in the earliest days of American cinema with Mack Sennett, Hal Roach, and Laurel & Hardy. He went on to write or direct dozens of films, most notably the classic adaptation of James M. Cain The Postman Always Rings Twice, and stayed active well into the TV era, working on such popular shows as "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," and "Please Don't Eat the Daisies.
