Pages clean and intact, age tanning to page edges. 173 pages. TARANTO - November 11, 1940. The Italian battle fleet lay snugly at anchor behind powerful defences. How could it be destroyed? Until then no navy had attempted to destroy a fleet with aircraft and it was believed in this case that an attack could only be successful if it were conducted within range of guns. Nevertheless there were some "fanatics"-as they were dubbed-who predicted an effective strike could be made by the flimsy slow-flying aeroplanes of the Fleet Air Arm. The "fanatics" proved to be right. They took off form the carrier Illustrious and flew 170 miles into air-naval history and fought a battle that was to become known as "the Trafalgar of the Air". They crippled the Italian fleet and altered the course of the war in the Mediterranean. (osl) ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall .
