Harking back to Virgil’s Polydorus his character Tancredi, having slain his Clorinda, enters the forest outside of Jerusalem, which has been enchanted by Ismend to prevent their felling for siege towers by the crusading knights. When he slashes out at a tree it bleeds blood and cries out in Clorinda’s voice. All the enchanted trees react as humans.
