Sobre este artículo

London: Arthur Barker Limited, (1964). Second Impression. Octavo, black boards (hardcover), gilt letters, top edge blue, 207 pp. Very Good+, with bookplate and light foxing (age darkened spotting) to page edges; in a Near-Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Few people, apart from those directly concerned, know much about the German and Italian soldiers, sailors and airmen captured in the Hitler war who were brought to Britain as prisoners. Fewer still know anything about the attempts, successful and oterwise, they made to escape. The reasons are simple. The wartime newspapers were thin, their staffs small, prisoners were usually confined in remote places and, perhaps most important, the authorities were reluctant to give out any scraps of news which they thought might have alarmed the public. In spite of this, author Robert Jackson tells in A Taste of Freedom the stories of a number of escapes which can be put to the credit of the prisoners. Some of the stories in this book are frankly horrifying. A prisoner suspected of giving away an escape plot was brutally kicked and beaten to death -- a crime for which five Germans were hanged at Pentonville. But even more alrming than the crime, is the story behind it. If the escape had succeeded, a large number of desparate men would have broken out of a campa at Devizes and attempted to seize tanks and aircraft with which they proposed to asault London. One of the most remarkable stories in this book is that of two Luftwaffe men who smuggled themselves out of acamp near Penrith, Cumberland, in laundry baskets, stole an aircraft from an aerodrome at Carlisle and flew across England before being captured again when they ran out of petrol. Many books have been published telling the stories of how British prisoners got away, but this is the first time a book has given in excitig detail the stories of the Germans and Italians who got away from camps in this country.
