Author John Bartholomew Gough (1817 - 1886) was a confirmed drunkard who lost his wife & child, as well as his bookbinding business, to his excesses. In 1842 he was induced to attend a temperance meeting & thereafter devoted his life to lecturing on behalf of temperance reform.
