Whitman won "every important tournament, including the National Championship and the first International matches, and retire[d] an undefeated champion" (introduction). "This edition, limited to four hundred and fifty copies, printed upon Van Gelder hand-made paper, is designed by William Dana Orcutt, and made by the Plimpton Press under his personal supervision" (limitation page). 9 ½" x 6 ½". Light brown boards with three-quarter dark brown cloth, gilt titles to front board, paper title to spine. TEG, Rough-cut pages. Half-title, limitation, frontispiece, title page with onion skin intact, copyright, dedication, 7-257. Condition: Many pages uncut from publisher. Clean and unmarked. The slightest touch of shelfwear to fore corners.
