ALS, from Tennyson as Governor of South Australia to Sir Richard Webster, incoming governor de Tennyson, Rt. Hon. Hallam (1852-1928) - 1900

Adelaide: Government House, 1900. Very good condition. Autographed manuscript letter on Government House Adelaide letterhead stationery, addressed to "Dear Sir Richard Webster", and signed, "Tennyson". Tennyson (1852 - 1928) was the eldest son of the poet, Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The Governor General of South Australia (1899-1902), he was in office during the Federation of the Australian states into the Commonwealth of Australia. He became the Governor General of the Commonwealth (1902 -1904) on the resignation of Lord Hopetoun. He writes to assure incoming Governor Webster of his warm welcome in Australia: "You will be glad to hear that we like Australia and the Australians much; and we hope that they in turn like us. The patriotic enthusiasm is magnificent and I am glad to have lived to see it". Bifolium, 4pp, (3 blank), 7 x 4 1/2". Two faint old creases.
