Sobre este artículo
London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1915. First edition, second impression (the same year as the first), presentation copy to the author's niece, inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Nellie in memory of Jan. 1914 from her most loving uncle A.J.B.", and in the publisher's deluxe vellum binding for presentation. The recipient Lady Eleanor Cole (nee Balfour, 1890-1979) settled in Kekopy Ranch near Lake Elementaita in Kenya in 1916. She published Random Recollections of a Pioneer Kenya Settler in 1975. The lectures were given in January and February 1914 - presumably Eleanor was in attendance. Balfour was British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905. Through the Balfour Declaration of 1917, he was a key figure in the eventual establishment of Israel. He was also a prominent philosopher: "The intellectual foundations of science were, he argued, as much open to doubt as were those of theology; yet there were reasonable grounds for believing in both kinds of system. In Theism and Humanism (1915) he concluded that God was 'the condition of scientific knowledge'" (ODNB). Octavo. Original vellum, spine lettered in gilt. Vellum a little soiled, contents clean. A very good copy.
