Het vegeterende leven dat Thérèse Raquin aan de zijde van haar tante en haar ziekelijke neef en echtgenoot Camille leidt verandert drastisch als Camille zijn jeugdvriend Laurent hervindt. Tussen Thérèse en Laurent ontstaat een onstuimige zinnelijke liefde die hen ertoe drijft Camille te vermoorden en tenslotte henzelf te gronde richt. Een belangrijk zwak punt van deze roman wordt in het voorwoord door Zola zelf aangeduid: kader en gebeurtenissen zijn te exceptioneel.
