Cream spine with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. xiv, 98 pages clean and tight. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY Esther Potter. This is the first facsimile of Ugo da Carpi's writing manual containing his own recuttings of examples from the manuals of Sigismondo Fanti,.Arrighi and Tagliente. Da Carpi also includes the Abbaco of Angelus Mutinensis. The decoration on the boards m and title page of the present edition are from these tables. Esther Potter describes this variant copy of the 1535 edition identifying the sources of da Carpi's material and describing the copyright quarrel between Arrighi and himself. The facsimile is made from an unsophisticated copy which originally consisted of two leaves extra ' to the normal edition. One of these leaves is missing but has been reproduced in the introduction. The extra material is described in the introduction. Certain variations in this copy are compared with other variants of the 1535 edition to be found in The Newberry Library, Chicago, The Houghton Library of Harvard University, The Bibliotheque Nationale and The University Library, Amsterdam. .
