London: The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Fair. 1849. 1st ed. thus, 4to., (13 5/8 x 11 1/8 inches). 30 hand-colored eng raved plates. Original publisher's brown cloth, blind decorations , gilt titles. Whymper was an English wood engraver, book illustr ator and watercolor painter who specialized in riverscapes. He wa s also well known for his fine engravings of animals, fish, and l andscapes for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (as h ere). The plates were first published in 1846 and this collected edition in 1849. They were offered both colored and uncolored ver sions. Scenes depicted include the Aurora Borealis, Geysers of Ic eland, Niagra Falls, Icebergs, Coral Reefs, San Storms, Volcanoes , etc. CONDITION: Fair; the thirty plates are all fine -- no foxi ng or tears, an occasional spot of light soiling in the margins n ot affecting text or image. Title page is disbound and free end p aper missing. Front cover is disbound, spine absent, and moderat e surface wear throughout. You are buying it for the plates. .
