Inscription to previous owner on front endpaper, dated Christmas 1981 and a blank bookplate on front pastedown. Dustjacket condition: Good, with light shelfwear and a couple of very small tears to spine and top of rear cover of jacket. Price-clipped. 316pp. 101 b/w plates. Thomas Hope (1769-1831), eccentric offspring of a Dutch banking family, employed his wealth and taste to impress on Regency society the principles of Neo-Classicism. While he invested in Old Masters, antique statuary and vases, he also patronised such contemporary painters as Flaxman, Thorvaldsen, Haydon and Benjamin West..
