I should, however, hasten to explain that the appearance of this small work by Mr. David Foxon in the centenary year is entirely fortuitous and that the Bibliographical Society has no intention of seizing the occasion to publish one more indictment of Wise. The whole business is much too distasteful for any such exploitation. None the less the methods used by Mr. Foxon in tracing leaves stolen from books in the British Museum and subsequently incorporated in Wise's copies in the Ashley library and elsewhere have considerable interest for the bibliographer. It was thought that it would be useful therefore to publish Mr. Foxon's short monograph, which might otherwise have appeared in a series of articles in The Library, as a separate work. F. C.
